Long haul drives can have a huge impact on your diet and trying to remain healthy on the road can be difficult, but snacks can make a huge difference. They can keep you satisfied in between meals and, by packing them yourself, you know you’ll always have them on hand when you feel peckish.

The food you decide to snack on though is important so, to help you make healthier choices, we’ve collated the best snacks whilst on long haul drives.

Healthy Long Haul Drive Snack Ideas

Whole Fruit & Dried Fruit

An easy and convenient choice, as well as a healthy one, is fruit! Apples, bananas, pears, grapes and tangerines are all items you can pick up and take on your journeys with you.

With such variety available to suit your taste, fruit is an alternative sweet treat that is super nutritious and can keep you fuller for longer! Don’t forget about dried fruit as a snack too which is still as nourishing and can be kept in your truck in a sealed packet.

Vegetables & Houmous

In addition to fruit, you can also pack some vegetables too which offer the same healthy benefits. Although there is more preparation involved in peeling and cutting up carrots, peppers and cucumbers, it is all worthwhile and you can prep for the week ahead.

Just bring along your Tupperware filled with veggies and pair it with a dip like houmous to make it even more tasty and filling.

Mixed Nuts

If you’re looking for even more variety, why not choose from the array of nuts that are available? With different flavourings, like honey roasted or chilli nuts, you can stock up nuts to keep you going on the road.

For a healthier option, choose some plain pistachios, cashews or peanuts and mix in some raisins or other dried fruits to create your own trail mix. Be careful not to overconsume these though as they aren’t as nutritious in large quantities, so portion them out for the week so you don’t overeat.

Popcorn

We all know how quick and convenient a packet of crisps is to snack on, but as moreish as they are, they aren’t particularly filling or healthy. Popcorn is an ideal alternative which is also available in individual bags and actually offers a bigger quantity whilst being healthier.

There are different flavours available, from sweet to salty – and even sweet and salty – so you can choose one that’s to your taste. If you love a crunchy snack but want to steer away from the crisps, then this is perfect for you!

Rice Cakes

Another crunchy snack option is rice cakes. When rice cakes come to mind, you might think they’re bland and boring but next time you’re in the supermarket, feast your eyes on the huge range of flavours that are on the shelves.

Don’t forget about the toppings either! Whether you want them plain and to add your own topping of peanut butter or chocolate spread, or you fancy a savoury seasoned pack or yoghurt dipped ones, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Protein Bars

Protein bars or cereal bars are another convenient snack choice for long journeys to tide you over until your next meal. Specifically designed to keep you fuller for longer, if you’re feeling peckish in between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner, all you need to do is grab one of these and it’ll fill you up.

It’s always important to check the nutritional value of these if you’re looking for a healthy option as they can overdo the sugar, but there are plenty of healthy options out there.

Chocolate

Of course, chocolate is still a snack option for when you’re on the road – sometimes you need a little pick-me-up and you shouldn’t feel guilty about it!

It’s all about moderation though, so choose individual bars rather than sharer bags so you don’t indulge too much. You can always opt for dark chocolate instead for a healthier alternative which is still just as delicious.

These are just a handful of ideas to help you make the healthier choice while on long haul drives. Make sure to take the time to prep your snacks for the week ahead, so you’re not relying on unhealthy petrol station options on your journey. Plus, remember to take water along with you too as sometimes you can be thirsty even though you feel hungry!
