There are many benefits associated with becoming a lorry or haulage driver, especially for those who love to spend time behind the wheel. However, due to changing regulations and legislations, it can sometimes be hard to know the steps that both drivers and companies should be taking to protect their fleet and remain compliant.
For example, in recent years, there’s been a lot of discourse surrounding the idea of whether or not lorry drivers should have to drive in pairs.
While this may seem like a great way to prevent accidents and driver fatigue, it is not currently mandated by UK law. Instead, there are a variety of legislations in place that dictate how long drivers can spend on the road, and the number of breaks they need to take.
Benefits of Lorry Driving in Pairs
There are a few potential benefits associated with pairing drivers or subcontractors together, especially for long-haul trips. For example, this could reduce the amount of time drivers spend behind the wheel, while also increasing shipment and fulfilment speeds. In some cases, it could also have a positive impact on workplace satisfaction rates, due to the fact that drivers are spending less time alone.
However, this does mean that companies may not be operating quite as efficiently, as it essentially halves the number of lorries they’ll have on the road at any given time.
What Are the Legal Requirements for Lorry Drivers in the UK?
In the UK (and EU), lorry drivers must:
- Not drive for more than nine hours a day (though this can be extended to 10 hours twice a week)
- Not drive more than 56 hours a week
- Take a break of at least 11 hours rest every day (i.e., between shifts)
- Take a break of at least 45 minutes for every 4.5 hours they spend on the road
Lorries and trucks must be equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to ensure that these guidelines are followed.
The legislation is put in place to prevent unfair working conditions, dangerous driving behaviours, and even improve the work-life balance of lorry drivers. As such, they must be followed as closely as possible. This is something that the team behind Transmode takes incredibly seriously, as we always want what is best for our drivers.
