Freight services refer to the process of transporting goods or products (freight) from one place to another, often from the place they are manufactured to their sales point. Service providers also deal with the logistics of the process. f you’re on the lookout for a service provider, it’s important that you decide which of the different types of freight services you require ahead of time.
There are many different types of freight services depending on the kind of goods you are transporting or their end destination. This includes:
As the name suggests, Less Than a Truckload freight services are designed for shipping smaller quantities of goods than other services. This is usually measured by weight rather than the number of individual products.
Full Truckload Freight services are required for higher quantities of products. This often means the truck is only transporting goods from this company or supplier in a designated shipment process instead of transporting freight for multiple businesses at once.
Intermodal Freight services refer to a process where various different transportation modes are used to get the products to their final destination. This could include road, train, or plane. During this time, the products are stored in what is known as an intermodal container.
Air Freight services are used to transport goods overseas by plane. While more expensive than other methods, it is often the quickest way to get freight from A to B.
Ocean Freight services are again designed to transport goods overseas, this time on a boat or shipping vessel.
Expedited Freight or shipping services are designed to transport goods quickly from one place or another. They can be used for time-sensitive orders or when products must be kept/stored in a certain way.
Road Haulage, quite simply, refers to freight transportation via road. This is often less expensive than other forms of road haulage, though it is just as (if not more) reliable. This is because the motorways within the UK are open 24/7, so our drivers do not face the same kind of delays or cancellations experienced by railways and airlines.
However, whilst the motorways are open 24/7 it’s important that during the journey all goods are kept safe. To learn more, our blog on How to Keep Your Road Freight Safe During Transport may help.
